Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ranjan Gogoi is the 46th Chief Justice of India appointed on October 03, 2018 by the President Ram Nath Kovind. He is known as the first person from Northeast India to become the Chief Justice at the Apex court of India.
Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi’s father was a politician in Indian National Congress, who served as the Chief Minister for the State of Assam in the year 1982. Justice Gogoi completed his graduation with honours in history from St. Stephens College, Delhi. He then received his law degree from Delhi University. After completing his education in law, he started practicing at the Gauhati High Court and got enrolled at the Bar in the year 1978. He was made a permanent judge there in February, 2001. Justice Gogoi subsequently became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court in February, 2011. He was then elevated as a Judge in the Supreme Court of India in April, 2012. On October 03, 2018, he succeeded Justice Dipak Misra to become the 46th Chief Justice in India.

On January 12, 2018, Justice Ranjan Gogoi along with three other judges of the Supreme Court became the first to hold a press conference. In the press conference, they alleged the prevalent problems of the legal system in lieu of failure in the justice delivery system and allocation of cases to the judges by the Chief Justice. This incident is popularly known as the 2018 Supreme Court Crisis. His term as the Chief Justice shall end on November 17, 2019.
