Supreme Court Issues Notice on PIL Seeking Inclusion of Legal Education and Self-Defense Training in School Curriculum.

The Supreme Court today issued notice on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the inclusion of legal education and self-defense training in the school curriculum.

A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan passed the order, with the matter tentatively scheduled for further hearing on January 1.

The PIL, filed by Advocate Geeta Rani, names all states, Union Territories, and the Union government as respondents. Citing the National Crime Records Bureau’s 2022 report, it highlights an 8.7% increase in crimes against children compared to 2021. The report notes that most cases involved kidnapping and abduction, with only 39.7% of complaints registered under the POCSO Act.
