Supreme Court Stays ₹1 Lakh Costs on Advocate Mehmood Pracha by Allahabad High Court

The Supreme Court recently set aside the Allahabad High Court’s order imposing a ₹1 lakh fine on Advocate Mehmood Pracha and expunged adverse remarks made against him. This case originated when Pracha, acting as a petitioner in-person, sought videographic records of the Rampur Lok Sabha election. The High Court dismissed his petition, accusing him of “forum shopping” and wasting judicial time, citing his attire (a lawyer’s robe and band) as inappropriate for someone appearing in-person. A fine of ₹1 lakh was imposed as a result.

Pracha appealed to the Supreme Court, which stayed the High Court’s order and acknowledged the need to examine whether the adverse remarks were justified. The Supreme Court also directed the High Court to refrain from taking further action on the primary case until its final decision.
